Where to start
Check the rules
Many towns limit the number of hens, ban roosters, or set a distance from the neighbor's house. Find out before you build anything.
Decide how many
Three to six is right for a first flock. They need company, and six hens keep a household in eggs.
Choose the breed
The breed finder narrows it down by climate, space and what you want from your hens.
Build before you buy
Pick a coop plan and finish it before the birds arrive. A brooder in the spare room is fine for chicks; a half-built coop is not.
Then start the first course
It walks the whole first year in order, with the guides linked at each step.
