About us

A backyard flock is the best decision you will make this year, if you go in prepared

Who we are, how we work and why this brand is set up the way it is.

How we got here

Stage 1

Decide

Work out how many hens you can keep, what your rules allow, and which breeds suit your climate.

Stage 2

Build

Pick a coop plan, gather the materials from the cut list, and build it over a weekend.

Stage 3

Start the flock

Bring home chicks or point-of-lay pullets, and set up the brooder or the coop right.

Stage 4

Keep them well

Daily checks, weekly cleaning, seasonal care. The guides and the journal walk you through the year.

A backyard flock is the best decision you will make this year, if you go in prepared

This started as a notebook of what went wrong: the coop that was too small, the breed that would not stop going broody, the feed that turned out to be mostly filler. It grew into the guides on this site, the courses, and the coop plans that thousands of people have now built from.

The point is a flock that thrives. Not a perfect one, not a big one, just healthy hens laying well in a coop that is easy to look after, kept by someone who understands what they are seeing. Everything here is in service of that.
